Initial prototypes of the high-performance Mercedes-AMG SUV, which will be the second vehicle to be built on the fully electric AMG.EA architecture, have started cold-weather testing. This follows Mercedes-AMG’s announcement to introduce a brand-new SUV under the Performance AMG marque.
Mercedes says this is an important milestone in the development process as it comprises tests at specialist facilities as well as on public roads. The winter testing is being conducted in northern Sweden. The same location also hosts the testing of the upcoming four-door coupé which commenced in the spring of this year. The high-performance SUV will undergo demanding tests near the Arctic Circle, at temperatures well below freezing point.
The new SUV aims to showcase Mercedes’ advancements in electric propulsion through a new all-electric architecture. This includes the use of axial-flux motors and a new high-performance battery concept. Further details of the anticipated SUV are yet to be revealed.
