To measure and adjust the chassis geometry of a wide range of vehicles with differing track widths, wheels and driver assistance systems at the end of a production line, Dürr Assembly Products has developed and implemented the highly flexible non-contact sensor x-3Dsurface into the x-wheel truck d wheel alignment stand for commercial vehicles.
The multi-axle structure of commercial vehicles can prove a challenge for some measurement equipment, but the non-contact x-3Dsurface is able to overcome this. The machine benefits from features such as a highly precise surface-based measurement and is capable of performing measurements straight away. This results in a significant cycle time benefit – especially for multi-axle vehicles.
Compared to the company’s previous line-based solution, the latest measurements contain more information and can cover an expanded number of vehicle types. These advantages enable customers to conduct more efficient and stable chassis geometry measurements. Additionally, the system’s flexible sensor distinguishes itself by integrating easily into existing systems. The sensor is not sensitive to outside interference.
Two cameras on the non-contact system capture the entire wheel and display it as a 3D “measuring surface in space”. This measuring surface helps to calculate chassis geometry values such as toe-in and camber. Additionally, for the first time, the sensor x-3Dsurface also enables non-contact caster and kingpin inclination measurement without having to mount measuring plates on the vehicle’s wheels.
The company conducted tests in the Dürr Assembly Products factory in Püttlingen in Saarland, Germany, to verify the function, reliability, precision and reproducibility of the new sensor with the most accuracy on the calibration gauge and various commercial vehicles. Following positive test results, a multitude of European commercial vehicle manufacturers have equipped their facilities with the all new test stands and technology as well as retrofitting the new sensor to existing machines.
