Infineon Technologies has launched the PSoC 4 High Voltage Precision Analog (HVPA) 144K microcontroller, designed to cater to the automotive battery management sector. Unveiled on May 3, 2024, the new microcontroller integrates high-precision analog and high-voltage subsystems on a single chip.
The solution aims to target the critical need for monitoring and managing automotive 12V lead-acid batteries, essential for powering vehicle electrical systems. The PSoC 4 HVPA 144K is ISO 26262 compliant, ensuring compact and secure intelligent battery sensing and management in modern vehicles.
Equipped with dual high-resolution sigma-delta ADCs and four digital filtering channels, the PSoC 4 HVPA 144K is designed to enable precise measurement of battery state-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH).
It achieves accuracy levels of up to ±0.1% in measuring vital parameters such as voltage, current and temperature, according to Infineon. The device also features two programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs) with automatic gain control, facilitating autonomous control of the analog front end without software intervention. Additionally, the utilization of shunt-based current sensing can enhance accuracy compared with conventional Hall sensors.
The microcontroller includes an integrated 12V LDO (42V tolerant), allowing direct power supply from the 12V lead-acid battery without external power requirements. It also features an integrated transceiver for direct communication with the LINbus, meeting the functional safety standards of ASIL-C per ISO 26262.
Powered by an Arm Cortex-M0+ MCU operating at speeds of up to 48MHz, the PSoC 4 HVPA 144K can provide up to 128KB of code flash, 8KB of data flash, and 8KB of SRAM, all with ECC. Furthermore, the device has digital peripherals such as four timers/counters/PWMs and a serial communication block configurable as I2C/SPI/UART.
Infineon provides automotive-quality software support for the PSoC 4 HVPA 144K, with its Automotive Peripheral Driver Library (AutoPDL) and Safety Library (SafeTlib) developed in compliance with automotive software development standards. Both libraries adhere to A-SPICE, MISRA 2012 AMD1, Cert C, and ISO 26262, says the company.
With the introduction of the PSoC 4 HVPA 144K, Infineon suggests it is laying the foundation to expand its PSoC microcontroller portfolio to include Li-ion battery management systems for EVs.
The company says the portfolio will soon include several solutions for monitoring and managing high-voltage (400V and above) and low-voltage (12V/48V) batteries.
