Renesas Electronics Corporation is to acquire Altium Limited, a PCB design software company. The acquisition, valued at approximately A$9.1bn, aims to establish an integrated electronics system design and lifecycle management platform.
This move responds to the growing complexity of electronic system design, which involves multiple steps and stakeholders. Renesas and Altium plan to streamline this process by unifying component selection, evaluation, simulation and PCB physical design at a system level.
Combining Altium’s cloud platform capabilities with Renesas’ embedded solutions portfolio, the platform is designed to enable the execution of electronic design steps on the cloud. This integration should enhance component lifecycle management and facilitate digital iteration of design processes.
Hidetoshi Shibata, CEO of Renesas, said: “The addition of Altium will enable us to deliver an integrated and open development platform, making it easier for businesses of all sizes and industries to build and scale their systems. We look forward to working with Altium’s talented team as we continue to invest and drive our combined platform to the next level of value for our customers.”
Aram Mirkazemi, CEO of Altium, added: “Having worked closely with Renesas as a partner for nearly two years, we are excited to be part of the Renesas team as we continue to successfully execute and grow.”
The transaction, approved by both companies’ boards of directors, is expected to close in the second half of 2024, pending shareholder and regulatory approvals. Altium will continue to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Renesas, led by Mirkazemi as CEO.
