Groupe Renault has developed an autonomous control system that can handle challenging driving scenarios. The technology is said to be capable of road obstacle avoidance on a par with that which professional test drivers can perform. In the development of the system at the Renault Open Innovation Lab in Silicon Valley, these drivers served as a benchmark.
The basis for this work comes from research published by Stanford University’s Dynamic Design Lab led by Professor Chris Gerdes, former chief innovation officer for the US Department of Transportation which has been working in collaboration with Renault Open Innovation Lab.
