Adding to its global network of R&D facilities, Volvo Cars has opened a new tech hub in Singapore to develop software, data and analytics and manufacturing technologies.
“This new presence in Singapore will support our in-house technology and software development capabilities. It will serve as a global innovation center to further accelerate our momentum and increase our capabilities in advanced manufacturing and data and analytics,” commented Javier Varela, chief operating officer and deputy CEO at Volvo Cars.
The new center is being established with support from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) through which the OEM can access the country’s local network and talent pool in the automotive and technology industries. This includes leading universities and wider education ecosystems as well as technology companies.
Cindy Koh, executive vice president, EDB, said, “We welcome Volvo Cars’ decision to set up its tech hub in Singapore. This is testament to Singapore’s attractiveness as an innovation hub for global mobility companies to develop solutions for the regional and global market. It will create exciting job opportunities for Singaporeans as well as partnership opportunities for our public research performers and local companies in developing new technologies and next-generation vehicles.”
Leading the center is Yvonne Tan, who joined the company on 1 September 1. She joined from Venture International, a tech specialist firm, where she was R&D director. She also has eight years of experience as senior engineering manager at Dyson Operations.
