The latest generation of brake control systems from Mercedes-Benz have been tested during drives on a frozen lake and up a mountain in Arjeplog, Sweden, near to the Arctic Circle. EQE, EQS, EQS SUV and EQE SUV models were used in the test drives, as well as models of future vehicle generations.
At present, the German OEM is focusing on the development of a new generation of stability control systems for its all-electric vehicle of the future. The system ensures the electric drive components are capable of precisely controlling the torque at the wheels.
“During the test drives, our team is primarily concerned with safety, efficiency and driving comfort,” said Christoph Böhm, head of brake control systems, Mercedes-Benz. “The development team tunes the brake control systems individually for each model series – and pushes them to their physical limits.”
Mercedes-Benz conducted these programs at its test facility near Arjeplog, as grips level on ice and snow can be up to 90% lower than those found on dry asphalt, creating vast differences on the stability and controllability of a vehicle when accelerating, stopping or changing direction.
All of the test vehicles were equipped with standard all-season or winter tires to reflect everyday usage by customers.
