Situated in Krakow, Poland, the new tech hub will serve as a software development center, supporting Volvo as it works to become a fully electric brand by 2030 with leading in-house software development.
The Swedish OEM plans to use the tech hub for the development of complete and key features for its upcoming all-electric vehicles. Volvo aims to accelerate the development of software in key areas, including core safety technology based on the company’s understanding of accidents, perception and driver assistance algorithms and the required software to enable autonomous driving. Engineers at the site will also be tasked with developing the OEM’s next-generation connected features.
Volvo plans to have the facility operational by the end of 2023, with around 120 employees working on a multitude of Volvo technologies. By 2025, the OEM aims to employ 500-600 people in Krakow to complement its other engineering centers in China and Sweden, in addition to other international Volvo tech hubs.
As the OEM’s all-electric EX90 SUV demonstrates, Volvo’s forthcoming fully electric cars will all be software defined, making in-house software development crucial if the vehicle manufacturer wants to achieve its strategic ambitions.
“We’re a purpose-led and technology-driven company, so our new generation of Volvo cars will be more than just transport,” said Jim Rowan, chief executive of Volvo Cars. “They’ll be computers on wheels, designed to be updated over the air with new software. That means our Krakow tech hub and growing our in-house software development capabilities are key to our future success.”
“Our ambition is to attract and recruit top talent globally by being present in strategically important locations,” added Hanna Fager, chief people officer at Volvo Cars. “Our new tech hub in Krakow is a perfect example of that. So, if you’re interested in shaping the future of mobility with a brand that’s at the forefront of technology development, and inspired to be part of nurturing our strong culture and values, Volvo Cars is the place for you.”
