Millbrook has further invested in its portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) by adding a dual flame ionization detector (FID) unit from supplier Sensors.
The dual FID will enable engineers to measure total hydrocarbons and methane simultaneously and will ensure absolute accuracy in all data gathered.
Phil Stones, head of emissions and fuel economy at Millbrook, explained, “We have seen increasing use of our PEMS capability throughout the past two years, which can be directly attributed to the impending regulation for real driving emissions testing.
“We are also seeing an increasing trend in the heavy duty sector, moving toward using compressed natural gas (CNG) with dedicated and dual-fuel diesel/CNG engines. This is seen as a way to reduce the carbon intensity of heavy duty vehicles, which is part of the government’s road map for this sector.
“However, one vital consideration is that methane has a global warming potential of 28, meaning one unit of methane equals 28 of CO2 and, therefore, any methane that is released out of the exhaust can offset the CO2 benefits of the fuel.
“Thanks to this addition to the PEMS, Millbrook is now able to measure and accurately quantify respective levels of methane and non-methane hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas.”
