Dr David Hynd, head of biomechanics and injury prevention and senior academy fellow at TRL, has been awarded a US Government Award for Safety Engineering Excellence. The award, which is presented every two years by NHTSA and recognizes outstanding contribution to vehicle and road safety, was presented to Hynd for his contributions to biomechanics research and improving vehicle safety.
Hynd has led a number of research initiatives in the field of biomechanics on behalf of both the UK Department for Transport and the European Commission. He has also served as chair of the Rear Impact Test Procedure Group for the European Enhanced Safety of Vehicles Committee and contributed extensively to the development and evaluation of test procedures and tools for legislative and consumer testing, with most of his research applied directly to regulations and standards that impact road safety. Notable contributions include the development and evaluation of frontal and rear impact dummies, as well as work to define the assessment procedures applied by the UK Department for Transport in its Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme, which received a special award for road safety from by His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent.
