Safety and vehicle crash test organization Euro NCAP has revealed the vehicles that achieved the highest overall scores based on results from tests conducted on adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable user protection and safety assist technologies.
The 2022 list features, for the first time, two cars from Tesla and two Chinese newcomers to the European market.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 was awarded best in class in the Large Family Car category; the Ora Funky Cat in the Small Family Car category; the Tesla Model S in the Executive Car category; the Tesla Model Y in the Small Off-Roader category; and the Wey Coffee 01 in the Large Off-Roader category.
The fully electric Hyundai Ioniq 6 achieved 97% in the adult occupant protection test; for child occupants, the vehicle delivered good protection levels for all critical body parts for six-year-old and 10-year-old crash dummies during the frontal offset and side barrier tests. This resulted in the Ioniq 6 achieving maximum points in that part of the assessment.
Several Chinese OEMs entered their vehicles for testing by Euro NCAP in 2022, with the Ora Funky Cat beating several well-known OEMs to achieve the best-in-class award in the Small Family Car category. The Wey Coffee 01, another Chinese brand, also performed well in all categories.
The Tesla Model S and Model Y also achieved high scores in the adult occupant protection test. Both vehicles achieved a leading score of 98% in the safety assist test. The Tesla Model S was named best in class in the Pure Electric category.
“2022 has been one of Euro NCAP’s busiest years yet and we have seen a lot of new car makers and new technologies,” commented Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP. “It’s clear a good Euro NCAP rating is seen by car manufacturers as critical to success in Europe. This can only mean better safety equipment and safer cars for European consumers all round.”
