Professor Patrick van der Smagt has been appointed head of artificial intelligence at the Volkswagen Group Data Lab in Munich, Germany.
So far, artificial intelligence has mainly been applied in autonomous driving and robotics. This includes pattern recognition based on image and sensor data, intelligent decision-making based on AI algorithms, and processing very diverse data types.
Robotic enterprise is a new field of AI which involves the use of auto-adaptive algorithms in corporate functions and processes such as those found in development, production, sales, finance, and quality assurance. Van der Smagt will focus on this area in particular.
Meanwhile the company is moving more than 1MW of high performance computing (HPC) applications to Verne Global’s data center campus in Iceland.
Harald Berg, head of IT tools, network and data center in the Volkswagen Group, said, “The hybrid data center solution of Verne Global gives us quick and easy capacity for our HPC applications. We were particularly impressed by the modular design of the data center that allows us to respond to increasing demands in a flexible manner.”
