Powertrain component supplier, BorgWarner, recently inaugurated a new 1,630m2 R&D building at its Spain Technical Center (STC) in Vigo. Equipped with the latest test tools and technologies, it houses office space, testing areas and laboratories and is designed to be energy-efficient and sustainable. A specially designed layout provides an efficient and comfortable work environment, which can accommodate 85 employees.
“The STC team has been a valuable part of BorgWarner’s worldwide development network. This expansion will further support our capabilities to design advanced exhaust gas cooling and recirculation systems for combustion and hybrid vehicles and add to the 49 patents it has already generated for innovative emissions solutions,” said Brady Ericson, president and general manager, BorgWarner Emissions Systems. “By expanding the center’s development capabilities, we also enhance our ability to help customers produce cleaner and more efficient vehicles, while strengthening our position as a product leader in emissions systems.”
The R&D facility consumes 80% less energy and uses 30% less water compared with average buildings in Spain. The structure was built partly using an existing building and with environmentally friendly materials. Nearly 90% of the construction waste was recycled. In addition to the smart building management system, which optimizes the use of energy, solar panels and waste heat from test benches heat water, highly efficient filters improve air quality, thermal and acoustic insulation saves energy and reduces noise, and large windows maximize natural light for a comfortable work environment. It is also equipped with electric vehicle charging stations.
