High-performance dynamometer business Sakor Technologies has provided Carpenter Technology Corp (CTC) with a dynamometer test system to test the effectiveness of new alloys used in electric motor components and inverters.
The Sakor system features a 250kW and 12kW Accudyne four-quadrant AC dynamometer, which covers a wide range of electric motor testing. A 250kW, 800V DC, ±500A battery simulator also features. The dynamometer and other subsystems have all been configured to ensure they are set up for electric vehicle (EV) motor and inverter testing.
The dynamometer will be automated by Sakor’s DynoLAB test automation controller, a system that enables engineers and technicians to design and implement complex test procedures without the need to learn a programming language. It also allows system operators to efficiently change and run tests using a simple menu-driven interface.
The multi-function two-dynamometer electric motor test system enables the testing of an array of motor sizes. Two universal inverters are also included, which can directly power AC motors under test. A high-voltage battery simulator that delivers DC power to the customer’s vehicle inverter, if available, also features. A cooling system allows air- and water-cooled motors and inverters to be tested.
The Accudyne four-quadrant dynamometers are capable of full bi-directional loading and motoring of the device under test. Full rated torque can also be delivered at stall. Each dynamometer and battery simulator is capable of providing regenerative power recapture, making the test systems power-efficient and cost-effective.
“The customer needed a machine that could test a very broad range of motor sizes and powers, and this new system allows them to test new motor technology with or without customer inverters, making it extremely versatile,” said Randal Beattie, president of Sakor Technologies. “This single system will take the place of as many as four independent test stands.”
