General Motors is to expand its design studio at the Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, with an additional 360,000ft2 floor space. The expansion represents the final stage of a multi-year US$1bn investment at the US facility.
GM will break ground in mid-2018 on the new building, which will surround the iconic Design Dome Auditorium and viewing patio, and connect to the existing design center. The project is expected to take around two to three years, with a new parking structure the first element to be finished at the southwest corner of the campus – construction for which is currently underway.
Michael Simcoe, VP of global design, said, “Investing in our creative and skilled team and providing them with inspiring, modern spaces, new technologies and more ways to work together will foster innovation that leads to real solutions for customers.”
Other improvements being implemented at the Technical Center include significant renovations to some existing facilities, including: the vehicle engineering center; the alternative energy center, including a new structural development lab; pre-production operations; and engineering west and south.
