De Tomaso has revealed that production of its P72 supercar will be undertaken by German engineering specialist Capricorn at a new production and development facility at the Nürburgring.
The company’s original intention was to build its cars in the US. However, in a statement De Tomaso said that disruptions due to Covid meant this would not have allowed it to meet production targets. “We are proud to have taken a strategic business decision to produce our pre-series and production P72s in collaboration with Capricorn at the new co-branded Nürburgring facility,” said Norman Choi, chairman of De Tomaso Automobili. “Nevertheless, we retain our current US partners, facilities, powertrain operations and initiative to expand our North American presence. Our P72 will not only be developed on but also produced at the legendary Nürburgring, providing unrivaled experience, quality and value for our clients.”
The company also reported that full-scale wind tunnel testing of a vehicle model was conducted at the Toyota Motorsport Group wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany, at the end of 2021. Work is now underway on the company’s pre-series prototypes, ahead of final development, validation and crash testing. De Tomaso’s target is to deliver its first customer vehicles in 2023.
