Korean manufacturer Hyundai Motor Group and USA-based EV startup Canoo are to jointly develop an electric vehicle platform, which will form the underpinnings of future Kia and Hyundai models, based on Canoo’s skateboard architecture.
Canoo will provide its engineering services in the development of the platform to meet Kia and Hyundai specifications. The resulting product will be a scalable, all-electric platform for a range of applications from small-sized EVs through to purpose-built vehicles.

Canoo’s skateboard platform incorporates the most critical components of the vehicle and has a strong emphasis on functional integration. Thanks to this focus on functionality, the skateboard size, weight and total number of parts has been reduced compared to a typical skateboard platform – ultimately providing more cabin space and a more cost-effective EV offering. In addition, it is a self-contained unit that can be paired with any interior design.
Crucially, Hyundai has specified that it wants the design of the platform to facilitate a simplified and standardized development process. It also aims to be able to reduce the complexity of its EV assembly line.
