Southwest Research Institute: senior research engineer for applied controls

Job summary:

Develop optimal control algorithms to improve powertrain and vehicle energy efficiency by leveraging connected-vehicle 'preview' information about the route/traffic/conditions ahead as part of the ARPA-E NEXTCAR program and similar projects. Develop and validate physics-based full vehicle models to predict fuel economy impacts. Interact with a team of engineers and technicians to provide feedback on data collection for model development and validation. Work as part of a dynamic team to rapidly bring concept to reality by leveraging existing designs and COTS technology.

Education/experience:
Requires a PhD in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related, specializing in control theory with 1-5 years of experience. Must have at least a 3.5 GPA. Required skills: Experience and fluency with MATLAB/Simulink; understanding of system/vehicle-powertrain physics: propulsion dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, etc.; ability to debug and problem solve complex software; research, understand, and apply technical literature regarding vehicle simulation techniques and vehicle physics; ability to learn quickly and adapt to the workflow of an established team; control theory and Optimization; Optimal Control theory such as Dynamic Programming and Pontryagins’ Minimum Principle; experience applying model predictive control to actual plants.

Preferred skills:
Familiarity with powertrains and control technologies (eg. CVT, DCT, VVT, EGR); experience w/embedded systems; knowledge of internal combustion engines; experience with vehicle/powertrain/fuel economy dyno testing and/or calibration. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; must be application and result oriented; experience with mechanical aspects of engine/vehicle testing and understanding of combustion and/or after treatment mechanisms required; must be self-starting and highly motivated individual able to manage multiple assignments concurrently with limited supervision. A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Special considerations:
Work assignment is in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident due to ITAR work in.
