Southwest Research Institute: engineering technologist powertrains

Job summary:

Install engines and other powertrain components in dynamometer test cells, including welding, fixturing and other mechanical installation tasks. Maintain test cell equipment. Modify engines and components as needed to install and maintain instrumentation. Execute test plans by operating engine and dynamometer, collecting data and performing initial interpretation of results. Interact with a team of engineers and technicians to deliver high quality operations. Maintain test cell ancillary systems, including facility support systems. Work as part of a dynamic team to rapidly bring concept to reality by leveraging existing designs and COTS technology.

Requires a high school diploma with 20-25 years related test cell experience or a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology with 0-5 years experience.

Required skills:
Understanding of test cell operations: engine installation, safety and environmental factors; experience with automotive mechanical systems: engines, transmissions, powertrain electronics; ability to identify and problem solve complex mechanical issues; ability to learn quickly and adapt to the workflow of an established team; desired knowledge and familiarity in instrumentation for engine control and emission monitoring; must be able to record data and document necessary information regarding calibration or maintenance performed on test equipment; must have laboratory knowledge, strong, demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and the ability to adapt and learn new programs utilized in the department; must be able to assist in keeping the laboratory and laboratory equipment clean; must be able to follow written and verbal instructions from project leader or supervisor; must be able to work in groups or independently as required by project needs.

Preferred skills:
Familiarity with powertrains and control technologies (e.g. CVT, DCT, VVT, EGR); experience w/embedded systems; experience with vehicle/powertrain/fuel economy dyno testing and/or calibration. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
