Top Euro NCAP scores for hybrids

Left: The five-star Honda Insight

The Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius have just been rated as some of Europe's safest cars, setting the benchmark for hybrid cars, according to the new independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP.

Euro NCAP's new rating scheme focuses on the vehicle's overall safety performance which gives consumers an easy to understand single score. The new system considers passenger protection during impact to the front, side and rear of the car, and pole (if the car impacts with a tree or other fixed narrow object), child protection and pedestrian protection. The availability of driver safety aids is also considered.

Honda carried out a lot of its safety research at its car-to-car crash test facility at the Tochigi R&D plant, which analyzes impacts between models of different sizes and weights and develops solutions to avoid injuries for all parties.

The new Toyota Prius is equipped with upgraded active, passive and pedestrian safety features and is built with a highly rigid, impact absorbing bodyshell that contains a higher proportion of high-tensile steel.

Extensive measures have been taken in the design of new Prius's front end to reduce pedestrian injury in an impact. The bumper structure is designed to minimise the risk of leg injury, with impact-absorbing materials inside the front bumper and beneath the radiator to help prevent a pedestrian's legs sliding under the vehicle.
