Atlas establishes Solar Test Center

Atlas Material Testing Technology has just set up an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, offering testing programs for full-scale PV arrays, BIPV, complete modules, and individual PV cells in a confidential and secure test site.

The center’s capabilities include many elements of qualification testing to industry standards such as IEC 61215, IEC 61646 and UL 1703. As product development projects expand in scope and expense, testing is required during the R&D process to validate performance and durability. Atlas can perform many of the individual tests required in these standards or custom, proprietary tests.

Resources at the center include a custom-designed SolarConstant source six luminary solar simulator; a walk-in environmental chamber for temperature and moisture cycling; I-V curve tracing measurements; UV pre-conditioning chambers; FLIR thermal imaging and analysis; outdoor exposure racks; and optical property measurements including hemispherical solar reflectance, transmittance and emissivity.

The center also provides proprietary R&D testing and exposure tests, including accelerated artificial weathering and durability testing using fluorescent, metal halide and xenon light sources; SolarClimatic chamber testing with solar loading and temperature and moisture cycling; accelerated outdoor testing using a solar concentrating system; ultra-accelerated solar exposure (100x optical); and solar radiometric measurements.

The new Solar Test Center also offers a range of testing options for in-situ testing of complete systems. Solar arrays can be tested grid-tied, under fixed load with periodic performance testing, measurement and evaluation as well as continuous data collection via state-of-the-art data acquisition systems.
