Show review: Automotive Testing Expo India 2014

Automotive Testing Expo made a successful return to the Chennai Trade Centre on 19-21 March 2014. The increase in exhibitor numbers from 108 in 2012 to 125 this year indicated the increasing importance of the show to the Indian automotive industry

There was also an excellent visitor turnout, as Dominic Cundy, managing director, automotive events division, UKIP Media & Events Ltd, noted: “People are happy, they’re having good conversations and fruitful negotiations,” he said. “The slowdown [in the car market] has not affected the show, as OEMs have to invest in reducing production costs and improving the technology that makes their development programmes more efficient.”

Commenting on the show, David Tessore, development manager, Powertrain Test Systems at exhibitor AVL India, said, “India is a growing market and an ideal place to have a show like this.”

Haldenwang-based MAHA-AIP has been exhibiting at the Indian show since 2010. It too emphasised the event’s importance: “The show helps us to keep up with the trends in the Indian market. We think it is very important to be present here,” said the company’s Michael Eberle.

Meanwhile S Ramanathan, managing director at Automotive Test Systems (ATS) had praise for the organisers for the “professionally managed” show: “All the leading test equipment makers are present here. We are meeting real customers and we are doing real business.”

The range of automotive testing equipment showcased at the show attracted trade visitors from the South Indian auto hub mostly concentrated around Chennai, but visitors also came in from the western auto hub in Pune.

Technical experts from global and Indian vehicle OEMs were looking for testing equipment for their facilities and found lots of new products at the show. Third-time visitor Durairaj Selakkaren, assistant manager, Automotive Sector Benchmarking at Mahindra & Mahindra Research Valley, was scouting for position sensors. “We are regular visitors to this show and each time we have ordered equipment. We hope to order this time as well,” he said.

Making its global debut at the show was a range of compact LED lighting developed by Germany’s High Speed Vision. The high-speed, wide-angled LED heads, each with 240W output, have been developed to use in vehicle interiors during crash testing. “This is the next-generation range: smaller, lighter and easy to use,” said HS Vision’s Thomas Weber.

Among many other new products at the show was LMS’s SCADAS XS data-acquisition system for noise and vibration measurements. “The portable system can be used in field diagnostics, mobile measurements and lab testing,” said Ajay Kumar Pandey, marketing coordinator for LMS.
