Q&A: Dr Reza Bihamta, CAE expert, General Motors

Bihamta discusses the latest challenges in the simulation of joining techniques


What is your career background?
In 2002 I started using finite element software. At that time I was modeling the precision forging process, and after graduation I got involved in simulation and optimization of multi-step hot forging dies. After two years, I started my PhD and worked on optimization of tube hydroforming and variable thickness tube drawing processes and at the same time I worked as a researcher at the CNRC (National Research Council Canada).

After my PhD, I worked with Alcoa Innovation as an industrial R&D fellow. At Alcoa Innovation I worked on various light weighting projects. In 2014, I joined General Motors where I began by developing capability in the modeling of joints. I am a CAE subject matter expert for modeling adhesives, sealers and aluminum. So far the outcome of my work at GM has been new tools and methods on the testing and validation of adhesive models.

How are you applying modeling and simulation techniques in your current role?
One of the main focuses in the CAE group at GM is the development of material models for different joining techniques such as adhesive, spot-welding, laser and sonic welding methods. Depending on the joint type, we design the appropriate tests for identification of material model parameters. Afterwards models are validated with some component level and full vehicle models.

What software are you currently using for CAE and what challenges are you currently facing?
Ls-Dyna, Ls-Opt, ABAQUS and HyperMesh are key packages. The difference in the performance of joining techniques in component level and full vehicle modeling is one of the challenges we are facing.

In my presentation [at this month’s New Methodologies for Modeling, Simulation and Testing Automotive Lightweight Materials], I will present some of the cohesive material models for modeling crash toughened adhesives in the automotive industry. Then some comparative studies on the performance of different models in component and full vehicle models will be presented. Finally I will present the challenges in this field.

Bihamta will be speaking on how to successfully model adhesive bonding joints at the New Methodologies for Modeling, Simulation and Testing Automotive Lightweight Materials Congress 2017, which takes place on July 26-27, in Detroit, Michigan.
